I’m not sure if German household detergents are just a polish phenomenon but what I’m sure about is that its scale goes way past purely hygiene matter. Polish street markets are full of those goods from our bordering neighbours. Not because there aren’t any washing soaps in Poland but because there is a deeply rooted belief that everything that comes from the west is of superior quality.
In her zine “Detergents from Germany” Gosia Kulik illustrates this phenomenon on a real example of a street market in Wroclaw (Breslau? ;) ), Poland. Her work is an affectionate, respectful sociological image of Poland. The author goes to said street market regularly to take inspiration for her drawings and do shopping but recently she even became a vendor selling sauerkraut!
